Visions Video Bar

Visions Video is the former video store and current Dalston favourite for its sweaty late night parties. Tucked away below ground like most of Dalston’s clubs, look out for the doorway on Kingsland Road or you’ll miss it. Inside, descend the long flight of stairs to the basement, which opens up into a space that hasn’t altered much since the days of VHS and films like BMX Bandits. The music has changed however, there’s reggae and a more general Caribbean sound on Saturday nights and a popular commercial edge to Fridays. ‘Work it’ is still one of its most popular nights where you’re likely to hear anything from Boyz II Men and Wu-Tang, to D’Angelo and Slick Rick and couple this with the Mad Mexican deal of beers and tequila and everyone’s dancing like it’s 1992. The appealing thing about Visions Video is the emphasis on the music above any aesthetic qualities that the club clearly lacks and although there is a trad appeal to it all it’s always the DJs that hold the attention rather than the empty shelves. If you’re the type that likes their own space then Visions probably isn’t the club for you, its small dance floor fills quickly and the bar is the only escape from the booming noise and mass of bodies with a typical young East London crowd in the majority most Fridays. The bar is limited but then its not the drinks that sell the place, it’s the music.
