King's Cross is still a foodie hotspot - this new eatery offers German delights like the famous kaffee and kuchen tradition (that's coffee and cake)

All In London

First home of the German Gymnasium Society, a sporting association established in London in 1861, and arguably the first purpose-built gymnasium in Britain, D&D have breathed new life into this historic building, creating a restaurant, grand café, bars and a terrace serving the best of central and northern European food throughout the day.

As the name suggests, there will be some specially selected and prepared German dishes from half-German executive chef Bjoern Wassmuth, but the menu will extend considerably across the European continent and won't be limited by the restaurant's Germanic name.

This vast restaurant set over two floors plus a heated terrace, occupies what was once England’s first gym. The food comes from central Europe, so as well as German dishes there is Austrian veal schnitzel and Hungarian beef goulash.

The German Gymnasium has a beautiful and very impressive interior which has been really thoughtful restored and adapted to the restaurant. We sat in the lovely little outside seating area overlooking the square on a surprisingly warm evening. The service was friendly, efficient and professional throughout, and the menu a real nod to the Germanic. The portion sizes were relatively small, but flavours were abundant and delicious, so after two courses we were just full without feeling like we were going to pop. I'd love to return and try the fab-looking bar as well as some more dishes on the dinner menu :-)
