I'll be going back just for the roti canai, even though it doesn't come cheap. Also, re the main meals, portions are big and make a hefty doggie bag. Tasty, pretty good value, but the waiters seem to have quite low English comprehension, so speak carefully.

All restaurants have their good and bad parts .No retaurant can claim to be the perfect and ideal as everybody will have their particular slants and preferences.
Based on their portions and prices in the heart of the west end(excluding buffett estaurants) C + R could be considered to be in the top especially their char kuey teow, wat tan ho and yes the satay is nothing to sing and dance about.I have been there a few times this year and i find that the food is still good, service (depend on the time and day) up and down.(no service charged)
So all in all i will still rate them above Kiasu in Bayswater,Melur in Edgware Road etc

Just thought I'd put a positive review for this place, as I felt the last review was completely opposite to my experiences at C&R. Firstly I have been there many times in the last couple of years, and have never experienced bad service - in fact nearly always it's been very fast, I've never had to wait very long for a table. The food is very good, my favorites are the Nasi Lemak, Mee Goreng, Roti Canai (the curry which comes with this is fantastic!) and Char Kway Teow. Also the Teh Tarik is very authentic! I'm also quite a Malay food snob - my Mum is born and raised in KL and we've visited many times. C&R of course doesn't compare to the Mamak places in Ampang, but it's a good reminder. In fact the best which I have tasted in the UK, other than my Mum's cooking!
I'm sure not everything on the menu is fantastic, but if you want a good attempt at decent Malay food you won't go far wrong with the Nasi Lemak and a Teh Tarik. The portions aren't small either (in true Malay style!) It's not particularly pricey either, I think under £10 for a large main course is pretty reasonable. Although it's not worth thinking about how many times more expensive it is than the real thing...
Anyway, I nearly always go for lunch at C&R when I'm in London, and always enjoy it! My only criticism would be the sambal is nowhere near spicy enough, but I guess this is to suit most paletes.

The worst restaurant i have been to in Chinatown is C&R, it was busy, so told to eat across the road at a shop counter , other wise i had to wait longer to eat in the restaurant.

We got a seat in the restaurant , for the four of us, it took a long time to take our order, we told the waitress we waited a long time for our table and then to get some service, she did not like this & spoke to a fat lady behine the till, ( i think we should hav left at this point!!)

When we got our beer, it was too warm, ask them to change it , the said they would not, but gave us a glass of ice each, and said this is how they drink beer in malaysa (i think i am been scam).

Food took over 45 minute (now you know why there a q), and was only warm and well below avarage for look or taste. we only pick at the food, it was that bad!!( should have left)

we quickly paid our bill and left,
it came to a total of £55.00 for 4 warm beer , 2 warm noodle dishes, 1 warm soup noodle, 1 curry with rice & 1 greasy satay prawn
(we decided not to say anything, it not worth the bother to upset our night out)

we want for a beer & pick another restaurant, the night was saved

I am of Malaysian origin and venured out to this cafe for obvious reasons. I found the food there very authentic but was slightly dissapointed with their satay which was basically fried chicken rather then bbq-ed and the peanut sauce was horrid. I recommend the kampung style fried rice, char keow teow and the hokkien mee.
A little pricy for what is basically a simple cafe. Prepare to pay around £10 per person min.
