It may not be as fashionable as it once was, and may be more famous for its afternoon tea than for its meals, but there is little doubt that the opulence of the Ritz Restaurant still attracts diners to celebrate special occasions.
The food harks back to the days of Escoffier’s classic recipes, with chef John Williams MBE sourcing most of his seasonal ingredients from the British Isles. The décor is a throwback to the court of Louis XVI, you simply will not find grander surroundings in London.

For the ultimate in posh dining head to The Ritz, where smart dress is essential. Food is innovative (lamb with smoked aubergine and rosemary curd, butter poached turbot with oxtail and lemon verbena) and with a set dinner menu for £50 not as exorbitant as you’d imagine. The terrace provides a pretty, yet unfussy alternative to the dining room.
If you’re looking for sheer opulence they don’t come much grander than The Ritz, with its chandeliers and frescoes fit for a royal dining room. The classical paintings cover the entire ceiling, while floor to ceiling windows look out onto the pretty terrace. Don’t even think about turning up sporting jeans or in the case of the gents, without a jacket.
