On the opening night of Cutting East 2014 will be a screening of Electro Chaabi- It is a documentary that follows the up and coming music craze of the same name. Electro Chaabi is music for revolution, it is the vehicle whereby the youth of Cairo can forget about their worries in their current social climate, and express themselves the best way they know how to- Through music. We are honoured to have director, Hind Meddeb flying in from France to take part in a special Q&A for the film. Although set in Egypt, this film really does resinate with us all, we all turn to music for relief from our troubles, no matter how different they may be. Following the screening we will be having music performances from local band, Daisychain Galaxy and we are in the stages of confirming more exciting acts!

In conjunction with this year's theme 'A Tale of Two Cities' we will be looking at the Bollywood influence on East London.

Miss Match:

Starring young people from A Team Arts of Tower Hamlets, this bang up to date adaption of Jane Austen's Emma interwines music and dance with colourful, energetic Bollywood overtones to tell its tale of young women who can't resist playing cupid. Miss Match follows a young girl named Tanya, who, despite her own love life being less than perfect, starts to intervene with the lives of of the people around her. Featuring dance sequences from IMD and EMBRACE. Arrive early to experience a live Bollywood dance performance! We will be finishing with a Q&A with the director and some of the cast!

Om Shanti Om:

A unique spin on the theme of ‘A tale of two cities’ which conjoins with the motif of the Cutting East Film Festival. It is a film which celebrates life, family and love as well as highlighting the dark underbelly society. This is fused together with vibrant music for all to enjoy, and learn about the sanctity of life. An absolute Bollywood classic and a must see for any film lover!

Followed by music and a Bollywood karaoke challenge.

Screentest:

We are delighted to have our Cutting East Friends, Screentest: The National Student Film Festival, at our festival this year. Screentest have been very supportive of our early years as a festival and we are very pleased to showcase a collection of their best shorts in our programme. This collection explores the festival theme ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ telling stories of different worlds.

PAYDAY directed by FRED&NICK and narrated by George the Poet, is a unique performance documentary, which delves into the lives of four twenty-somthings. The film focuses on the contrasting lives of the diverse cast from the moment they recieve their 'Payday' money to how they go on to spend, save or squander it.

Irons in the Fire Food. Dance. Music and sports. Blend together a passionate young person with these creative mediums and success becomes a reality. ‘Irons in the Fire’ follows five inspirational young people, facing up to struggle as they conquer success. This Film Festival Premiere delivers a powerful story of how five young people, reached their current success through the support of several organisations. Elevated by Idris Elba’s narration and George The Poet’s punchy & enlivening words, the film explores the importance of maintaining your own identity whilst appreciating the opportunities that exist for young people. Ultimately the message of passion combined with communication through creative instruments is most emphasised.

Follwoing the double bill screening of these two films we will be joined by George the Poet, FRED&NICK and some of the cast and crew from both films for a special Q&A in which we will be finding out about what went into making both films, why they are important to the community and to get a glimpse of what's to come!

Bringing Cutting East to a sublime close, join featured artist, George the Poet for a special Cutting East performance of his sensational poetry. George will be joined by local, talented spoken word artists commenting on issues inspired by the films and celebrating young people’s achievements.
