South Bank Award nominee 2014 and Sadler's Wells New Wave Associate, Alexander Whitley showcases two works in his company's inaugural tour: The Measures Taken and The Grit in The Oyster.
Commissioned by the Studio Programme of The Royal Ballet, The Measures Taken is a visually striking and kinetically charged quintet. Created in collaboration with digital artists Marshmallow Laser Feast, the performance questions our relationship with technology and the contrasting ways we come to view the world in a culture highly mediated by digital technology.
The Grit in The Oyster sets a trio of dancers against Thomas Adès Piano Quintet. Drawing on Adés’s reference to a ‘fetish note’ in the Piano Quintet, Whitley explores how a single movement might fulfil the same function in a choreographic structure, or how a third dancer might act to change the relationship between the other two.
“This is crowd-pleasing stuff, but it is also a reflection of Whitley’s inventive mind” The Telegraph
