Crossing Jerusalem
by Julia Pascal

‘I may be a rotten Israeli but at least I can try to be a decent Jew’

This summer marks the first anniversary of the second Israel-Gaza War. Unanswered questions remain in this explosive political situation and, in Crossing Jerusalem there is a cast of characters - Israeli Jews, Christian Arabs and Muslim Palestinians- who grapple with issues of nationalism, identity and land, within the context of the continual Israel/Palestine conflict.

Award winning theatre director and playwright Julia Pascal brings this complex political and thought provoking production to PARK 90, running from 4 - 29 August 2015.
Press Night Thursday 6 August 7pm.

CROSSING JERUSALEM

Set during the 2002 intifada, and just before the invasion of Iraq, Crossing Jerusalem is a potent and dynamic exploration of the theatre of war. The play describes 24 hours in the life of an Israeli family who cross Jerusalem to eat in an Arab village. In the course of a single day Arab and Jewish histories burst into the present in the most politically tense city in the world.

This is the first British production since the premiere at The Tricycle Theatre in 2003, directed by Jack Gold. The German translation Mittendurch Jerusalem was produced in Germany at the Badisches Staatstheater, Karlsruhe in 2007.

JULIA PASCAL

An internationally recognised figure within the theatre world, Julia Pascal is the only British female playwright with a large body of published and produced plays inspired by Jewish history and culture. Pascal’s impressive career demonstrates her talent for creating visionary, highly acclaimed productions. She was the first woman to direct at the National Theatre and was Associate Director at the Orange Tree Theatre, prior to forming Pascal Theatre Company for the production of New Writing and large site specific projects. This year her Old Newland, directed by Cressida Brown, was part of Theatre Delicatessen’s Walking The Tightrope season. Her St Joan, directed by Katrin HIlbe, a success at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, has just toured Europe. Pascal’s short political play in the Radio 4 series, From Fact to Fiction, produced by Charlotte Riches, will be broadcast 27 June and 28 June 2015.
