Every April, Cityread London unites thousands of lives through literature, placing one book at the heart of the capital. This year Gillian Slovo’s critically acclaimed novel Ten Days has been chosen as the Cityread London 2016, sponsored by Audible, the world’s leading provider of spoken audio entertainment.

Cityread invites you into the world of Ten Days, a thrilling journey through ten hot, tumultuous days in London that ruin lives, make careers and change a community forever.

From Saturday 2nd April – Sunday 8th May, people will have the opportunity to interact with digital installation “Stories from the City” within Foyles bookshop’s central London gallery, with sounds and stories provided by sponsor Audible. The free installation will allow visitors to explore the first 72 hours of Ten Days, leading up to the fictionalized riot through a ‘police control centre’.

Visitors can unlock audio extracts from the audiobook to explore themes and examine evidence from the story relating to the disturbances in Rockham, which are spreading across London. Content is ‘triggered’ by placing evidence relating to each scene onto a control desk panel, generating audio and visual cues. People’s experiences of the story and themes can afterwards be shared in an area of the installation, modelled in part on the impromptu wooden boards that were written on and covered up broken shop windows in the 2011 London riots.

The installation has been produced in partnership with Bristol-based Standard + Stare and creative consultant Jon Slack, with audio excerpts of key moments from the book brought to life by narrator Joe Jameson.
