This 17th century house retains most of its original grandeur and furnishings, much of which is owed to the Countess of Dysart, however the house was actually built for Sir Thomas Vavasour, Knight Marshal to James I. The rooms contain impressive paintings, sculptures, textiles and furniture as well as displays depicting 17th century life. The gardens have also been exquisitely kept, the Cherry Garden in particular is renowned for its beauty. However it’s not all aristocratic portraits and chandeliers, some rather out of the ordinary events take place here too, like Chinese tea tasting sessions and bridge courses!

The lavish building, situated right by the River Thames, can be hired for weddings, however beware that Elizabeth’s ghost (and that of her dog!) is said to roam the house freely. Admission prices vary depending on the time of year, but average around £9 for an adult. Regular guided tours take place and are free to those participating.
