Southwark Playhouse temporarily moved in January 2013 to a new site in Southwark to make way for the London Bridge Station redevelopment which is due to be completed in 2018.

The theatre programme aims to facilitate and showcase the work of some of the UK’s best up and coming talent with a focus on reinterpreting classic plays and contemporary plays of note.

Our two atmospheric theatre spaces, within the vaults of London Bridge Station, enabled us to offer theatre artists and companies the opportunity to present their first fully realised productions. Now in a huge new warehouse space since the move in January 2013, the theatre has 100 more seats than previously in the Main Hall as well as extended bar, cafe, rehearsal and office facilities!

London's most cherished theatres

We've put together a list of what we think are London's greatest theatres.

Whether you are seeing a production on the main stage or in the Vault below, Southwark Playhouse will offer the same thing. Drama. Working with schools and young, up and coming writers, the theatre is always striving to present new and creative theatre. Located between Bermondsey and London Bridge, the Southwark Playhouse is another with a bar worthy of a visit alone.

PLEASE can you change the seating. I loved the play but with a bulging, pregnant belly found the seats too tight, too hard and just too uncomfortable. It's enough to make me not go back :-(

Really cosy, atmospheric theatre with an approachable and non-pretentious vibe, but the seating in the main theatre is awful - so uncomfortable and for anyone with any kind of height, I'd imagine it would be impossibly tight. I was willing the second half of the performance to end as I was desperate to move out of the chair! The cafe/bar is great serving good, basic food at very reasonable prices and quickly enough to wolf down before the performance!
