Although the Serpentine’s second site is housed within a 19th century gunpowder store, a new addition designed by Zaha Hadid looks like it could come straight out of a sci-fi movie. The Serpentine Sackler Gallery is just a seven minute walk away from the original venue, and in addition to providing an extra 900 metres of exhibition space it has a restaurant and event space. The old Grade II listed building was finished in 1805, constructed in the neo-classical style with doric columns on its facade. Hadid has added a space-age pavilion attached to one side of the gallery, where a restaurant called The Magazine is located.
The gallery’s schedule follows the seasons, with four different shows a year; like its predecessor, exhibiting artists will all be contemporary.
