Apparently art is anything that doesn't have a purpose... apart from just to 'be' I suppose... :confused2:

Interesting thread guys

I've added it to our features list for the week (see the home page).

Why do I think art is?

To me art is something that looks nice on my wall, I don't buy art to be moved or to provoke discussion, I buy it to cover dodgy wallpapering and polyfilla marks.

ur answer is so right! - i mean seriously - we only stick things on the walls to cover things - namely the emptyness - though it works well for other things - such as the aforementioned reasons

I can't completely go with the art isnt so great kind of vibe I'm feeling, cause, well, I'm an artist. Though that sounds so poncey to say it. But like I said earlier, I don't like modern art. I don't like fooling people into thinking something has some profound meaning when all it is is some paint sneezed onto a canvas. I don't buy it and it makes artists out to be weird pretentious a*ses.

However, there are paintings that mean something to me when I see them, and when i know the stories behind them. One of my fave pieces, for example, is John Constable's Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows. I fell in love with it when I was little.

If I have paintings on my wall, which I don't, in my case they would have to mean something to me. That may just come from being an artist though, I understand how it doesn't apply to everyone and it doesn't have to.

My ex's little sister took art GCSE because it was easy (the reason I didn't take it). She used to buy cheap canvasses, painta mess of colours on it, call it 'modern art' and sell them on ebay for over £100 to complete idiotic saps who fell for her stories about what each piece meant and what she was inspired by. When she completely admitted to just making it all up. Is easy money, but I found it offensive to something I care about.

i went to the tate modern yesterday and ive been there once before about 5 years ago and it was worse now than it was then :( i actually didnt mind the tate modern the first time i went but this time there really wasnt anything interesting not even the crap art :( the only thing i found interesting was picasso and monet.

whilst i was there i saw an octogan cut out of paper and just stuck on a wall, no one was looking at it bcoz it was that S**T! lol also i went into a room where a video was playing of a naked man stupidly dancing around rubbing his nipples and making stupid noises, it was disgusting!!

best part of my day was going in the disney shop
